Alex Nally is Deputy General Counsel at the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education (DHE). He first joined DHE in 2018 as the DHE’s inaugural SARA Coordinator to implement Massachusetts SARA. Prior to re-joining DHE in 2023, Alex served as Legislative Director and Deputy General Counsel for Massachusetts State Senator Julian Cyr, where he led the Senator’s budgetary and legislative agendas, including drafting and filing legislation to eradicate book bans in Massachusetts schools and libraries, phase out the sale and manufacture of PFAS in consumer products, and shed light on political expenditures in local elections and annual town meetings. As the State Portal Entity (SPE) Representative for Massachusetts, Alex serves on the NEBHE SARA Regional Steering Committee. In addition to supporting the Legal Office’s day-to-day functions, Alex also provides legal support to the DHE’s Tuition Equity, Campus Safety and Violence Prevention and Financial Assessment and Risk Monitoring initiatives, and manages DHE’s interagency regulatory compliance platform, EDvera. Alex is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (US) and earned a JD/MS in Law & Public Policy and Graduate Certificate in Data Analytics from Northeastern University, as well as a BFA in Studio for Interrelated Media (with honors) from MassArt.
